The year is 2005, I’m staring at the green CBS internship application that the professor just distributed to my Media Broadcasting class. My heart thuds with excitement and my stomach knots in anxiety at the mere thought of interning at the monolith that is CBS. I go as far as filling out my name. I decide not to apply but save the application nonetheless.
Throughout the years, I would come across that green piece of paper and think “What if?”
It took me until 2013 to finally find my way to CBS (Better late than never, right?). During my career’s journey under the CBS Television Stations division – first as a Research Analyst and now as a Marketing Manager – I have been fortunate to work on projects which I am proud of. Two projects, in particular, stand out.
In one situation, we had just secured business with a Peruvian Tourism client. The Senior Vice President and the Director of Marketing – my bosses – had a conference call set up with the client and the CBS account executive in San Francisco. The catch? The client didn’t speak much English. I wielded my Spanish fluency like a superpower as I translated production and media strategy to the client’s team of executives in Peru.
My language skills came to the rescue again when a tech client wanted to encourage people from Latin backgrounds to apply to jobs at its organization. There I was plugging away at Spanish copy and ensuring my accents were accurate. While I always wear my “Latinahood” as a badge of honor, and it precedes me before I walk into any room, this was a side of me that people at work – including me – don’t get to see.
As a Dominican-American, I was naturally drawn to RAD, the CBS Multicultural Employee Resource group. My first event was “Skirting the Issue”, a short film that explores the complexities of Latina culture and identity. In the end, the group had a meaningful conversation with the director, Carlos Berrios. After that, I was hooked. Every time I received a CBS RAD email, I knew I had to attend. These events truly celebrate diversity as talks span different cultures along with subcultures that leave you with new insight. I make it my mission to spread the word. As you make your contributions to this company, CBS RAD is an example of how the company is dedicated to your personal growth.
This summer, I found myself thinking back to that green application for the last time and how much my life has changed. I reflect on what I’ve accomplished, lessons learned, friendships gained and that I am a part of a great organization that has made diversity a priority and a strength which makes me feel seen. I know that this is where I’m meant to be. Our summer marketing intern who is originally from Venezuela brought home this very message for me. In her “Thank You” note she writes: “You seriously made this internship the best and I appreciate it. It feels so good to have another awesome Latina here.”
