CBSSports.com lands largest audience ever to watch a football game through digital platforms
The CBSSports.com live stream of CBS Sports’ broadcast of No. 1 LSU defeating No. 2 Alabama was viewed by a record audience of 214,560 college football fans. This number of unique viewers for the LSU/Alabama game is believed to be the largest audience ever to watch a football game through digital platforms. The 214,560 record number of unique viewers was composed of the following:
- 171,648 viewers on CBSSports.com
- 42,912 viewers to CBS Sports mobile using iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, & iPod Touch)
The largest sports event ever streamed on the web was CBSSports.com’s NCAA March Madness on Demand presentation of the 2010 first round game between BYU and Florida in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. The BYU/Florida game, which was viewed by 1,153,981 fans, saw Jimmer Fredette and the seventh-seeded Cougars hold off the 10th-seeded Gators 99-92 in double overtime.

The LSU/Alabama game was a ratings hit for CBS as the game earned the second-highest rating for a regular-season college football game (excluding bowl games) on CBS in the metered markets since September 1987 (as far back as CBS records go). Yesterday’s 11.9/21 for LSU-Alabama trailed only CBS’s 14.5/26 for Notre Dame vs. Miami (11/25/89).
