LONDON, Nov. 30, 2010 — One year after the launch of the CBS Chello Zone UK Channels, the portfolio has achieved notable ratings growth and is expanding its extensive range of programming with more high-profile, U.S. CBS shows, including “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “The Colbys” and “Dallas,” as well as more episodes of the ever-popular “NCIS” and “Medium,” both of which are already ratings-winners for the channels.
In November 2009, CBS and Chello Zone formed a joint venture to rebrand as CBS and re-launch six channels from Chello Zone’s existing television channels in the UK. One year later, the channels have achieved a significant increase in ratings, gained access to content from Hollywood’s largest television programming library and rolled out a fresh and cohesive new on-air look for the portfolio.
In its first year, CBS Reality has established itself as one of the top 50 digital channels in the country on the Sky platform, growing its audience 85%*. CBS Action has grown its adult audience by 300% while CBS Drama has grown by 200%, putting them among the fasting-growing entertainment channels on the Sky platform. CBS Drama and CBS Action each reach over two million viewers every month. All of the channels saw a dramatic improvement in ranking in Sky homes over the first year with CBS Action jumping 62 places, CBS Drama 44 places and CBS Reality 15 places.
Horror Channel reaches three million viewers every month and is the second-biggest free-to-air movie channel in Sky homes after Film4. David Lynch’s seminal “Twin Peaks” launched this month and has pulled in the highest viewing figures for the channel this year.
CBS Chello Zone Channels reach viewers in more than 13 million homes throughout the UK via the Sky, Virgin Media and Freesat platforms.
The portfolio boasts a strong line up of well-known shows, including “Dynasty,” “NCIS,” “Jerry Springer,” “Charmed,” “Medium,” “Judge Judy,” “Footballers’ Wives,” “Star Trek: The Original Series,” “The Dead Zone” and “Twin Peaks,” which have proved a huge success since the channels’ launch.
After a successful run of Footballers’ Wives on CBS Drama, CBS Chello Zone UK Channels completed a new deal with Warner Bros. International Television Production (previously Outright Distribution) for the entire “Footballers’ Wives: Extra Time” series comprised of 32 episodes for CBS Drama.
“It’s been a really exciting first year,” comments Reed Manville, Executive VP International Channels, CBS Channels International. “We were confident from the outset and the ratings growth proved there is a real appetite for modern classic shows. The pipeline of content from CBS’s library with some smart acquisitions is proving to be a very good formula for entertaining UK audiences.”
Chris Sharp, Chief Programming Officer for Chello Zone commented, “Since the launch of the portfolio, the channels have continually grown stronger. With such fantastic results in only one year, we are excited to forge onwards supplying the UK with top-quality programming and celebrate many more birthdays!”
