Entertainment Communications Intern: Works with all members of the department and assists them in publicizing primetime series, movies, mini-series, specials, daytime dramas, and late night publicity in the print and broadcast media. The intern will become familiar with entertainment publicity in general -- and with television network publicity in particular.

The staff includes press representatives, an executive director of broadcast publicity (who produces electronic press kits that offer behind-the-scenes looks at projects), and a director of broadcast publicity (who produces TV and radio satellite sessions for CBS talent).

Typical assignments for interns include logging tapes of footage and interviews to be used for the electronic press kits, researching topics being featured in a particular movie/mini-series /special or series in order to help in the creation of a press release or electronic press kit, writing photo captions and story lines/releases from scripts, gathering information on magazines and newspapers that specialize in topics covered in upcoming projects, developing publicity plans, updating media lists, and conducting limited media pitching. Interns will also be invited to attend radio and TV satellite sessions, staff meetings (generally held on Tuesdays and Fridays) etc. Of course, interns will also be asked to fax, copy, make tape dub requests, help with the daily clipping report, and prepare packages to be messengered to print and broadcast outlets.

An optimal candidate will be a creative, self-starter interested in a hands-on learning environment. They should be proficient in computer and organizational skills and have good writing skills.

Interns are expected to work a minimum of two full days a week for no less than 10 weeks. The internship is non-paying; therefore the student must receive course credit for his/her time at CBS. CBS will, however, pay a $10 daily stipend to help toward transportation and lunch costs.

Corporate Communications Intern: Works with all members of the department, including the Executive Vice President and Vice President of Communications, as well as the Vice President of Community Relations, assisting them with all aspects of Communications and Community Affairs for the network. The intern will become familiar with all aspects of corporate communications and community relations for a television network.

The responsibilities include: assisting in the production of the department's annual press guide by keeping track of what copy comes in and when and update the program schedule and the hometowns and birthday sections. Additional responsibilities will include assisting the clip coordinator with copying and putting together the daily clip packet. Interns will also be asked to fax, copy, and prepare packages to be messengered.

Photography Intern: Interns in the CBS Photo Department help with many aspects of our day-to-day operations. The tasks include everything from organizing and sleeving transparencies to photo research and assisting on photo shoots. There may also be a chance to shoot simple assignments. And if you don't know anything about PhotoShop now, you will before you're finished here.

Emma L. Bowen Foundation:
Description:
The Emma L. Bowen Foundation was established by the media industry to help increase access to full-time staff positions for minority students. The Foundation's program is unlike other intern programs in that students work for a partner company during summers and school breaks from the end of their junior year in high school until they graduate from college. During that five-year period, students have an opportunity to learn many aspects of corporate operations and develop company-specific skills. Corporations have an opportunity to guide and develop minority students with the option to hire them for full-time staff positions upon completion of their college degree. Students in the program receive an hourly wage as well as matching compensation to help pay for college tuition and expenses. Mentoring from selected staff in the sponsoring company is also a key element of the program.

Student Selection Process:
The partner company and the Foundation's staff work together to recruit students through local high schools and colleges and academically-based pre-college enhancement programs. Student applications are provided to qualified candidates. Minority students with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and an interest in the media industry as a career are eligible to apply. Student applications, teacher recommendations and academic records are reviewed by Foundation staff and forwarded to the partner company. Interviews with students can be conducted with or without Foundation staff. The partner company makes the final selection.
